First TIG welding… the beginning

How to weld a beginner?

At this weekend I tried welding 1,5mm thick iron plates with my new TIG welding machine.
My tool shop was a big playing place for me and my father. I never did TIG welding before, so I’m just learning…

The main question was, that can I weld the parts? A professional welder naturally can do it, but I’m just a beginner… There is so many setting options where all welding process parameters settable. In this two, or one and a half days I tried many-many settings, filler rods, tungsten rods… First impressions were, that this machine is good enough to a beginner.

TIG welding sheet metal components:

I was totally wondered that the first trial was “good”. Firstly I just welded two 2,5mm thick plates each other with its own material, so I didn’t use filler rod, just welded plates each other. After this good results I tried to weld 1,5mm thick plates. Just cut some pieces of plates which were 70-80mm length, from a 20mm width / 1,5mm thick plate strip. I fixed the plates perpendicular where one plate hung over the other with 4mm. (as you can see this on the pictures below)

TIG welding reults:

As I see the 1,5mm plate welding will work, so the parts what I planned are OK. In my opinion, if I can practice a lot, I will be able to weld the parts each other properly, in good quality.  Currently I have just 2mm dia. OK12.64 filler rod. Based on my short experiences, I think for this thin plates this filler rod is too thick. And the 2,4mm tungsten rod maybe not ok for the 1,5mm thick plates. I ordered 1,6mm filler rod and some tungsten rods with different diameters. As I read, the red tungsten is not too healthy… so I won’t use this type of tungsten rod in the future.

Please don’t laugh on me! Here are some pictures from this weekend.
Yes I have to learn TIG welding! I know…
